ResilienSEA (2021-2022)

Seagrasses are flowering plants of terrestrial origin that form extensive meadows between tides and in low tide zones. They provide multiple benefits to the marine environment and human communities that depend on the sea for their livelihoods .

Problems We Face

Seagrass is one of the most important habitats in the ocean. They provide benefits such as nurseries and feeding grounds for fish and marine animals, protect our coastlines and store carbon. At the same time, as one of the least known ecosystems in the world, they are in dire need of protection.

One of the main reasons for the lack of protection for seagrass is the lack of information on some of the most basic aspects of its distribution and health. This project builds knowledge on seagrass meadows in West Africa and pilots in selected locations. It also develops new management tools, and helps governments protect seagrass and the services they provide.
